Essay on Classical Architecture An Everlasting Imprint

Architectural style that was developed by the ancient Greeks has had such an influence on many world civilizations that it surrounds us even to this day. The symbolism that this architectural style has represents power, dignity and recognition that is everlasting throughout generations. The Romans particularly skilled at concrete construction were intrigued by this style and incorporated this technique into their very own building and temple structures. El Paso High School located in El Paso, Texas is a representation of how powerful of an influence ancient Greeks and Romans have had on cultures around the world. Approaching the entrance of El Paso High School on the East facade you will notice that the shaft of the columns have†¦show more content†¦The columns to both edifices have vertical hollow grooves known as flutes. The colonnades support a pediment decorated with dentils that surround the outer surface of the pediment. Both edifices have Corinthian capitals that are adorned with acanthus leaves and wide porticos. The similarities of both of these buildings are quite astonishing and the architectural style of the Maison Carree must have had a significant influence on the construction of the high school and many other buildings. For instance Thomas Jefferson found that the Maison Carree â€Å"gave inspiration to the design of the Virginia State House in Richmond, Virginia.[1] Aside from the physical appearances both of these buildings serve different purposes for the public. The Maison Carree has had a checkered past and has served as a temple to dedicate the young sons of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and then later on was transformed into a Christian church. The faà §ades of the building are part of a local high school in the community. The Maison Carree has columns that surround the external structure of the building whereas the east faà §ade only has columns that stand in front of the entrance of this building. Another distinction between the t wo edifices is that the Maison Carree entire structure sits on a high podium unlike the high school where the faà §ade is the only part that sits on a podium. I chose my artifact by looking at what materials, tools, animals, etc. went back through the last two thresholds and had enough information about them to respond to all the requirements of the research paper rubric. At first, I chose agricultural tools, but that was too broad of a topic. I needed to single it down to a specific tool. I chose the hoe because that is the first thing that came to mind as it is a common tool. I used the hoe a lot as I had a garden when I was younger that I took care of for years with my grandpa. We grew things such as tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, cabbage, cantaloupe, sun flowers and some other veggies. My understanding of the artifact changed as I now realize what all it did for society and what other inventions it inspired. At first, I thought it was a simple tool that not many people used. I also thought it was insignificant as many large-scale/commercial farms switched to plows, then tractors, and now use giant electronically managed farm equipment to do all the work for them. This means that all of these less developed countries are still using plows, if even that, and even more are using the hoe still. In the social science research, there are main stages that lead to the collection of data. The first stage is the stage of theory that is followed by methodology that is once again followed by research design. In my understanding, theory is a set of testable propositions that have emerged through empirical data. In social science research, there are mainly two types of methodology-Quantitative and Qualitative. Quantitative methodology is influenced by the epistemology of positivism and emphasizes on objectivity and detachment in the pursuit of research. On the other hand, Qualitative methodology is informed by the interpretivists methodology and emphasizes on subjectivity and understanding the social action of the social actor. Researchers who swear by the positivist philosophy begin their research with a hypothesis about the research problem (Berg 2014). This is followed by the beginning of fieldwork through either the survey method or the structured interview schedule. After the completion of the research the theory used by the researcher may or may not stand true. Therefore, this is known as the deductive approach. On the other hand, interpretivist epistemology involves beginning with a basic research question and then going to the field. After the collection of data and collation of the findings, it can be found that a theory emerges through the fieldwork. This is known as the inductive theory and it is widely known as th e inductive approach. The importance of theory lies in its ability to explain a phenomenon that would otherwise posit as puzzling for the researcher. In other words, theories provide coherence to understand a social event. For example, the deviant attitude of a child and his unmanageable behaviour can be understood through Sorin and Galloways constructions of different kinds of children based on the context. Apart from providing explanations, theories have the potential to provide predictions. In this regard, Durkheims sociological theory of suicide becomes a lens to examine the role of instability and breakdown of the social machinery in contributing to suicide of a person. Similarly, Durkheim linked the rate of suicide with the degree of ones attachment with the community. This brings m to the third aspect of a theory that it comprises two or more variables where one variable is a dependant variable and another one is an independent variable (Wodak and Meyer 2009). One important aspect that I learnt abo ut theories is that it is not necessarily generalisible to a larger demographic region and is limited to a specific socio-political context. Another important aspect of theory that I have realized that in case of research, theory provides direction about the way the research is to be conducted by presenting a framework to begin and pursue the research. All of these words from people I have never met, and never spoke to, who found my picture and decided to comment on it. Some harsh words just for not being beautiful, huh? Even still, Cynthessa is herself when she models, or well â€Å"models†. She has so much confidence in herself and her modeling, and doesn’t care about what anyone else thinks. She is carefree; and stays true to herself, no matter who tries to tell her that she’s not good enough. She teaches me that it’s okay to laugh at myself, and that I should never take life too seriously. I’ve realized that life is so much happier and so much better if you can laugh at your mistakes and your â€Å"flaws†. Cynthessa has given me the confidence to be truly myself, and to not beat myself up when everything doesn’t go my way. Recently, I took a step back and looked at my life, and it gave me the chance to realize the major things that have shaped the person I am today. When I took a look at my life, I understood that all of my good characteristics came from one person, one character, and multiple photographs. I could have never imagined that something originally so insignificant could have such a tremendous impact on my life. Charles M. Schulz once said â€Å"If I were given the opportunity to present a gift to the next generation, it would be the ability for each individual to learn to laugh at himself.† Unfortunately, this gift did not come from him, but from a close friend of mine. The Nuremberg Trials

The Nuremberg Trials The Nuremberg Trials were a series of trials that occurred in post-World War II Germany to provide a platform for justice against accused Nazi war criminals.   The first attempt to punish the perpetrators was conducted by the International Military Tribunal (IMT) in the German city of Nuremberg, beginning on November 20, 1945. On trial were 24 of Nazi Germany’s major war criminals, including Hermann Goering, Martin Bormann, Julius Streicher, and Albert Speer.   Of the 22 that were ultimately tried, 12 were sentenced to death. The term â€Å"Nuremberg Trials† would eventually include this original trial of Nazi leaders as well as 12 subsequent trials that lasted until 1948.   The Holocaust Other War Crimes During World War II, the Nazis perpetrated an unprecedented reign of hatred against Jews and others deemed undesirable by the Nazi state.   This time period, known as the Holocaust, resulted in the deaths of six million Jews and five million others, including Roma and Sinti (Gypsies), the handicapped, Poles, Russian POWs, Jehovah’s witnesses, and political dissidents.   Victims were interned in concentration camps and also killed in death camps or by other means, such as mobile killing squads.   A small number of individuals survived these horrors but their lives were changed forever by the horrors inflicted upon them by the Nazi State. Crimes against individuals deemed undesirable were not the only charges being levied against the Germans in the post-war era. World War II saw an additional 50 million civilians killed throughout the war and many countries blamed the German military for their deaths. Some of these deaths were part of the new â€Å"total war tactics,† yet others were specifically targeted, such as the massacre of Czech civilians in Lidice and the death of Russian POWs at the Katyn Forest Massacre.   Ã‚   Should There Be a Trial or Just Hang Them? In the months following liberation, many military officers and Nazi officials were held in prisoner of war camps throughout the four Allied zones of Germany.  Ã‚   The countries that administrated those zones (Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States) began to discuss the best way to handle the post-war treatment of those who were suspected of war crimes.  Ã‚  Ã‚   Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of England, initially felt that all those who were alleged to have committed war crimes should be hanged.   The Americans, French, and Soviets felt that trials were necessary and worked to convince Churchill of the importance of these proceedings.   Once Churchill assented, a decision was made to move forward with the establishment of the International Military Tribunal that would be convened in the city of Nuremberg in the fall of 1945. The Major Players of the Nuremberg Trial The Nuremberg Trials officially began with the first proceedings, which opened on November 20, 1945.   The trial was held in the Palace of Justice in the German city of Nuremberg, which had played host to major Nazi Party rallies during the Third Reich.   The city was also the namesake of the infamous 1935 Nuremberg race laws levied against Jews. The International Military Tribunal was composed of a judge and an alternate judge from each of the four main Allied Powers.   The judges and alternates were as follows: United States – Frances Biddle (Main) and John Parker (Alternate)Britain – Sir Geoffrey Lawrence (Main) (President Judge) and Sir Norman Birkett (Alternate)France – Henri Donnedieu de Vabres (Main) and Robert Falco (Alternate)Soviet Union –Major   General Iona Nikitchenko (Main) and Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Volchkov   (Alternate) The prosecution was led by U.S.   Supreme Court Justice, Robert Jackson.     Ã‚  He was joined by Britain’s Sir Hartley Shawcross, France’s Francois de Menthon (eventually replaced by Frenchman Auguste Champetier de Ribes), and the Soviet Union’s Roman Rudenko, a Soviet Lieutenant-General.   Jackson’s opening statement set the somber yet progressive tone for the trial and its unprecedented nature.   His brief opening address spoke of the importance of the trial, not only for the restoration of Europe but also for its lasting impact on the future of justice in the world.   He also mentioned the need to educate the world about the horrors perpetrated during the war and felt that the trial would provide a platform to accomplish this task. Each defendant was permitted to have representation, either from a group of court-appointed defense attorneys or a defense attorney of the defendant’s choosing.   Evidence vs. The Defense This first trial lasted a total of ten months.   The prosecution built its case largely around evidence compiled by the Nazis themselves, as they had carefully documented many of their misdeeds.   Witnesses to the atrocities were also brought to the stand, as were the accused.   The defense cases were primarily centered around the concept of the â€Å"Fuhrerprinzip† (Fuhrer principle).   According to this concept, the accused were following orders issued by Adolf Hitler, and the penalty for not following those orders was death.   Since Hitler, himself, was no longer alive to invalidate these claims, the defense was hoping that it would carry weight with the judicial panel.   Some of the defendants also claimed that the tribunal itself had no legal standing due to its unprecedented nature. The Charges As the Allied Powers worked to gather evidence, they also had to determine who should be included in the first round of proceedings.  Ã‚   It was ultimately determined that 24 defendants would be charged and put on trial beginning in November 1945; these were some of the most notorious of Nazi’s war criminals. The accused would be indicted on one or more of the following counts:1.   Crimes of Conspiracy:   The accused was alleged to have participated in the creation and/or implementation of a joint plan or conspired to assist those in charge of executing a joint plan whose goal involved crimes against the peace. 2.   Crimes Against the Peace:   The accused was alleged to have committed acts that including planning for, preparation of, or initiation of aggressive warfare. 3.   War Crimes:   The accused allegedly violated previously established rules of warfare, including the killing of civilians, POWs, or malicious destruction of civilian property. 4.   Crimes Against Humanity:   The accused was alleged to have committed acts of deportation, enslavement, torture, murder, or other inhumane acts against civilians before or during the war. Defendants on Trial and Their Sentences A total of 24 defendants were originally slated to be put on trial during this initial Nuremberg trial, but only 22 were actually tried (Robert Ley had committed suicide and Gustav Krupp von Bohlen was deemed unfit to stand trial).   Of the 22, one wasn’t in custody;   Martin Bormann (Nazi Party Secretary) was charged in absentia.   (It was later discovered that Bormann had died in May 1945.) Although the list of defendants was long, two key individuals were missing.   Both Adolf Hitler and his propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, had committed suicide as the war was coming to an end.   It was decided that there was enough evidence regarding their deaths, unlike Bormann’s, that they were not placed on trial. The trial resulted in a total of 12 death sentences, all of which were administered on October 16, 1946, with one exception Herman Goering committed suicide by cyanide the night before the hangings were to take place.   Three of the accused were sentenced to life in prison. Four individuals were sentenced to jail terms ranging from ten to twenty years.   An additional three individuals were acquitted of all charges. The Nuremberg Trials also established the principal that one could not escape justice by merely claiming to have been following orders of a government entity. In relation to war crimes and crimes against humanity, the Nuremberg Trials would have a profound impact on the future of justice. They set the standards for judging the actions of other nations in future wars and genocides, ultimately paving the way for the foundation of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, which are based at The Hague, Netherlands.
